Tuition Assistance Minimize

Service Cancelable Education Loan (SCEL) Fact Sheet

What is the Service Cancelable Education Loan (SCEL)?
The SCEL is a state sponsored tuition assistance program that provides students with grant money to attend a college or university within the state of Georgia.  The state provides up to $1,684.00 per semester and $1,123.00 per quarter, which is distributed on a first come first serve basis until the money is depleted.

How much assistance does the SCEL provide?
The SCEL presently pays a maximum of $1,684.00 per semester.

Can I use the SCEL along with other educational benefits?
Yes.  The only educational program you can't use with the SCEL is the HOPE scholarship/grant.

What if I am in default on state sponsored educational loans?
You can't receive the SCEL until you pay off your Title IV State of Georgia educational loans in full.

What are the requirements to participate in the SCEL program?
You must be a member of the Georgia Air National Guard.  You must be a legal resident.  You must attend a Georgia school that is eligible for HOPE scholarships.  You must be enrolled at least halftime as defined by the school you attend.  You must not already have a baccalaureate degree.  You must maintain sufficient academic standing, good academic progress, and program pursuit.   You must submit a plan for completion of your degree with the Georgia Air National Guard.

Will the SCEL pay for classes that I've already taken?
No.

What happens if I drop out of class, lesson my course load below the half-time minimum, or am processed for unsatisfactory participation?
You will be dropped from the program, and the grant will rollover into a student loan with an 8% interest rate.  The Georgia Student Finance Authority (GSFA) will handle the student loan.

Who should I talk to for more information?
